Do you find yourself striving for perfection and feeling inadequate when things don't go as planned? If so, you may be struggling with perfectionism, a subset of Imposter Syndrome that sometimes plagues professionals. These struggles are common, but they can hold you back from living authentically and pursuing your dreams. In this post, we will explore the roots of perfectionism and offer strategies to help you overcome these obstacles.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism is often rooted in the fear of failure, and the belief that one's self-worth is tied to external achievements and recognition. While striving for excellence can be motivating, perfectionism can lead to anxiety, burnout, and a never-ending cycle of self-criticism. Here are two strategies that may help you overcome perfectionism and live authentically.

One way to overcoming perfectionism is to redefine your definition of success. Rather than solely focusing on external markers of success (e.g. promotions, etc.), consider what brings you joy and fulfillment. Pursuing activities or projects that align with your values and passions can help you tap into your natural strengths and creativity, rather than relying solely on external validation.

Another strategy is to embrace the power of imperfection. Making mistakes and experiencing setbacks is a natural part of the learning process, and can provide valuable insights and opportunities for growth. You can take the "I never loose, I learn" approach rather than berating yourself for not being perfect, embracing the lessons learned and use them to inform your future actions.

Conclusion:

Striving for perfection can be a daunting obstacle, but they don’t have to define your life. By recognizing the thought processes and behaviors associated with these struggles, and implementing strategies for overcoming them, you can start living a more authentic, full life. As a coach, I am here to support you in this journey, and help you create a roadmap for living life on your own terms. Remember – the first step towards change is acknowledging the problem, and the next step is taking action.
